We would like to acknowledge that this presentation is being delivered from London Ontario, which is situated on the traditional territories of the Original Peoples of Turtle Island including the Anishinaabek (Ah-nish-in-a-bek), Haudenosaunee (Ho-den-no-show-nee), Lūnaapéewak (Len-ah- pay-wuk) and Attawandaron (Add-a-won-da-run) peoples. We pay respect to the land and to Elders past, present and future who have been telling stories here long before us.

We recognize that our ancestors came to this land through government-sponsored colonization. Although we cannot change the past, we can control our future. We encourage each of you to learn more about the ancestral lands and history of the First Nations Peoples where you live and work.

This production runs approximately 80 minutes, no intermission.

A Letter from the Director

When myself and the Allswell team watched the film version of The Last Five Years together last year with the question of “will this show be our next production?”, I was hesitant. The music was intricate and the story was moving, but what could we do with this show to set it apart from past productions? It wasn’t until I watched Jeremy Jordan’s rendition of “Nobody Needs To Know” that I was convinced, and this song became the catalyst for my entire vision for this show. Without spoiling “the moment” of that song for you all, I will just say: this song made me wonder what would happen if Jamie and Cathy’s stories could intertwine in a way that showed both their emotional connectivity and separation simultaneously.

The format of the show – she sings a song, he sings a song, etc. – gave me a clear template of what we could do with the show. Typically in productions of Last Five, Jamie and Cathy are not present on stage at the same time, except for the brief moment they meet in the middle and during their final departure, creating a clear metaphor of emotional and communicative distance. My choice to have the couple on stage with each other for the entirety of the show was a challenge to organize and direct, but was worth the effort. I wanted to show that Jamie and Cathy are very present in each others’ lives, living in each others’ space, but never quite on the same page; their paths are constantly crossing, but rarely align. Sadly, their end was always written in the stars (and script): no amount of love could have made this relationship work, as their lives were always headed in the wrong direction.

We are so thrilled to bring this special story to the Auburn stage, after months of exploring the complexities of Jamie and Cathy. This show has allowed the cast, crew and band to explore the two character arcs in a way that spoke to us all on a personal level. We can learn from Cathy’s mistakes and relate to her selfless love and perseverance. We can condemn Jamie’s actions while also relating with his drive, charm, and confidence. Thank you to our Cathys (Alicia and Brittany) and our Jamies (Blue and Kyle) for gifting us with the vulnerability, understanding, and care that these characters deserve.

Thank you for reading and thank you for coming to see this special show. I hope you enjoy it.

Hailey Hill, Director

A Letter From the Music Director

If The Last Five Years was written in chronological order, it would be a love story likely to be seen as common and uninteresting. The show's signature element is its structure - front-to-back interlaced with back-to-front. The criss-cross nature of our story has massive implications on the music. The beginning and end of the show offer the greatest contrast in the emotional state of our two characters, and so as we flip back and forth in the timeline, the musical contrast is utterly devastating. Contrast is also a big part within each character's storyline, reflected by material near the end of the show calling back to similar music and lyrics introduced near the beginning - I don't want to spoil anything, but see if you can find these parallels.

Don't let the short runtime fool you - this is a mighty 80 minutes. I'm extremely grateful to our artists for lending their talent and energy. Particularly for our musicians, the orchestrations for this show are some of the most technically demanding in the repertoire. On the topic of orchestrations, I'd like to thank Heather for her hard work on creating and adapting a percussion part that completes and enhances the texture - to create something that works so well with the original material that you'd think it was always there is not an easy task.

Working on this show has been an incredible joy, while at the same time offering an opportunity to reflect on my own journey. I'm immensely grateful to everyone involved in the production for allowing me the space to confront this beautiful but challenging piece - challenging in both technical execution as well as emotionally. With the show so heavily rooted in reality, the stories of either or both of our characters may be something that resonates strongly with you. It may be tempting, then, to consider The Last Five Years as common and uninteresting - but we hope that by the end of our show, you'll agree with us that it's anything but.

Ben Leibovitz, Music Director
