A Letter from the Director
14 years ago, I saw a production of the new and lesser known musical The Drowsy Chaperone at the 1000 Island Playhouse and I was hooked. My mom always poked fun at me, saying “every show you watch becomes your new favourite musical”, but this one was different. It was laugh-till-you-cry funny, incredibly charming, all of the music was catchy and the characters were diverse in personality and range. “What more do you need for an evening’s entertainment?” as the show’s narrator Man in Chair asks.
In 2022 when we were deciding what would be our first musical back from the height of the pandemic, something that would allow the audience to escape from the stresses of the world, choosing this show was a no-brainer. When I revisited the script after a decade of romanticising the production I had seen as a teenager, I suddenly became aware of its flaws. Some of the jokes were outdated, the accents were questionable, and the characters were stereotypical. I began to panic. My favourite show wasn’t everything that I remembered.
But I wasn’t alone. The Drowsy Chaperone is also Man in Chair’s favourite musical. He grew up listening to the music, idealising the show, just as I did. After experiencing the show within the show in its entirety, Man in Chair reflects on its flaws, stating “I know it’s not a perfect show”. And while I also know the show isn’t perfect, I think that’s the point. Musicals are a reflection of their time; a time capsule of what brought people to the theatre. The 1928 Drowsy Chaperone, the show within this show, is what audiences loved in classic musicals: slapstick comedy, farcical characters, and a fully resolved plot. And the 2006 Drowsy Chaperone by Bob Martin, the one on stages today, is what audiences enjoyed during its time: risque jokes and breaking the comedy norm. While I had to redirect some scenes to be more appropriate for a modern audience, the purpose of this show remained the same: “It does what a musical is supposed to do. It takes you to another world… A little something to help you escape from the dreary horrors of the real world.” And for that reason, it is still my favourite show.
Thank you to this cast and crew for taking a show that has been so special to me for years and bringing it to life in a way that I never could have dreamed of: in a way that 2023 audiences can enjoy while never deviating from the joy that this show stands for.
